Swim Lessons Swim Lesson Schedule • Parent/Tot Aqua ClassPrivate Swim Lessons

At the Y we’ve helped thousands of children over the decades learn to swim and love the water. We hire only knowledgeable, compassionate instructors who know how to put kids at ease. So whether you have a toddler who's taking her first dip into Pike, or an experienced swimmer who’s ready to tackle the Shark course, you’ll see we take our lessons seriously—and still make time to have fun. (Water slide anyone?)

SWIM CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Pike

This level is for beginner swimmers.  Students will learn basic paddle strokes, kicking skilld, and floating with instructor support.

Eel

This level is for swimmers who are well-adjusted to the water and eager to become more independent.  Students learn how to float on their own and swim longer distances.

Polliwog

This level is for swimmers who are ready to begin developing strokes and swimming in deeper water.  Instructors teach students alternating and symmetrical paddle, treading water, as well as help swimmers develop good judgment around water.

Bluegill 1

These swimmers review previous skills and work to develop endurance in swimming, floating and treading water.  If your swimmer has just passed the polliwog level, has a weaker flutter kick, or needs a float belt while in swim  lessons, this level is for them.  It will be taught primarily in the recreation pool with some introduction to the lap pool and deeper water.

Bluegill 2

This level is for the experienced Bluegill that has a strong flutter kick, is comfortable in the deep water and can easily swim 25 yards without a float belt.  In this level, swimmers learn how to increase their endurance, perfect their technique and Breaststroke is introduced.

Guppy

Guppies do not use a floatation belt. They learn to swim 25 yards (one pool length) on their front, back, and side with alternating paddle strokes; float on their front and back for one minute; tread water for one minute; do a kneeling dive; and perform rhythmic breathing.

Minnow

Swimmers learn the breast stroke and side stroke; refine the front and back crawl; and work on the dolphin kick and standing dive.

Fish

Fish improve technique and speed of the 50-yard front crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and side stroke. They practice the 6-minute front and back float, learn how to surface dive (both head and feet first), and get introduced to the butterfly and open turn.

Flying Fish

Flying Fish must complete 100 yards (4 pool lengths) of the front crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and back crawl; 25 yards of the sidestroke with inverted scissor kick; 25 yards of the butterfly; and 100 yards of the individual medley (all four major strokes).

Shark

Shark graduates will be able to swim 100 yards of the front crawl with flip turns, 100 yards of the breaststroke with turns, 100 yards back crawl, 50 yards of trudgen crawl, 50 yards of the butterfly stroke, and 50 yards of the over-arm sidestroke on both sides.

Porpoise

These highest level swimmers will master their strokes and speed, learn deep water boat entrance skills, practice rescue swims and snorkeling, and help teach Polliwogs.
